Erratic Schedules

looking at the life of a glacial erratic to the social formations that have organized around it.
on natural processes and their artifacts inscribing the forces of their environment, human and non-human alike.

“Most natural processes happen at scales of space and time that are difficult to grasp, and therefore easy to ignore. The phenomena of tides, for example, are controlled most strongly, yet from a great distance by the constant and certain, movements of the moon, and are likewise affected by the relative uncertainty of weather, flowing in the space just below the atmosphere and just above the ground. They are one of the few instances where the physical relationships between the sky above our heads and the soil below our feet are visible to the human eye, turning entire regions from land into water, twice a day. Glacial erratics, too, are one of the phenomena that make geologic time-scales perceptible to human eyes.”

“’Glacial erratic’  is the name given to rocks that  have been transported hundreds of thousands of kilometers by the movement of glaciers over hundreds of thousands of years.

Away from their homes and in a foreign geologic environment, analysis of their chemical compositions can date these stones and trace them back to their places of origin, with their various surface markings of water and wear giving hints to their journey along the way.”
